Chief inspector appointed to lead new regime for building safety

17 February 2021

Following recommendations by Dame Judith Hackitt in her review of the Grenfell Tower disaster, steps are being made to launch a new building safety regulator service.

In the first steps toward achieving this, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has announced that the department will be led by Peter Baker as chief inspector of buildings.

He is the HSE director of building safety and has more than 30 years' experience in the inspection of buildings.

Mr Baker has additional served as the HSE chief inspector of construction and has been involved in the Building Safety Programme that includes overseeing efforts to remove dangerous cladding from high rise buildings.

He will now be responsible for establishing the building safety regulator division, which will aim to deliver a new regulatory regime.

In addition to identifying high risk buildings, its focus will also include increasing competency levels of those working in all areas, while delivering improved safety levels across the built environment.

Mr Baker will additionally ensure that the department will provide independent and expert advice to industry, government, landlords and residents.

His appointment was welcomed by Dame Judith, who complimented Mr Baker's "long track record of working in partnership with industry and other regulators to bring about behavioural and culture change that improves people's safety".
