Workers' serious injuries result in £200,000 fine

14 September 2020

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has emphasised the need to ensure that correct and safe working procedures are established to oversee all work-based procedures.

The HSE was called after an employee of FM business Totally Local Company was seriously injured on 30 November, 2018 after being crushed between a ride-on roller and vehicle shipping container.

He became trapped between the roller and container, which he was attempting to lock, during construction work at Abney Hall Country Park, Stockport, Greater Manchester.

Following the HSE investigation, it was found that no traffic management plan had been established.

This had resulted in unsuitable traffic routes being used and inadequate separation of pedestrians and vehicles, resulting in risks to both employees and the general public, as the site had remained open during the project.

The resulting court case was held at Manchester Magistrates’ Court and saw Totally Local Company pleading guilty to breaching sections 2 and 3 of The Health and Safety at Work Act etc 1974.

It was subsequently fined £200,000 and ordered to pay costs of more than £8,300.
