Court case over fire safety failings brought by Camden Council

High Court legal action has been launched by Camden Council with the aim of recovering costs following the evacuation of residents from the Chalcots Estate tower blocks in 2017.

Urgent works were deemed to be necessary, identified following the Grenfell Tower disaster, to fix a number of fire safety aspects and replace cladding on the Chalcots tower blocks.

As a result, the council said it incurred costs in evacuating residents and employing fire marshals and security staff, along with the cost of the repair work.

Investigations showed that both fire doors and internal fire stopping were inadequate and that aluminium composite material cladding needed to be replaced.

The case has been brought against the PFI consortium Partners for Improvement in Camden (PFIC), which is currently in liquidation, Rydon Construction, Rydon Maintenance, Faithful + Gould and United Living South.

In the meantime, Wates has been appointed as principal contractor to oversee the completion of all necessary works.

A spokesperson for the council said the court case has arisen after "two years' examination of historical agreements, contractual responsibilities and works completed during the period in which we had a contractual relationship with PFIC".

The review has ensured the council is "clear about where responsibility lies for the range of fire safety defects at the Chalcots which led to the evacuation and its associated", said the spokesperson.
