Industry bodies launch net zero commitment

Organisations and companies have launched the Pledge to Net Zero, claimed to be the first joint UK commitment applying science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The initiative is designed to assist the UK's drive to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, joining a growing number of public bodies in this.

Those signing up to the Pledge to Net Zero include the Society for the Environment, the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and the Environmental Industries Commission.

They have also been joined by consultancies WSP and AECOM and their efforts add further to the conversation developing about the FM sector's role in reducing carbon emissions.

There are three main aims within the pledge, the first of which is the delivery of science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets.

The organisations have additionally promised to publicly report greenhouse gas emissions and their progress against their targets.

Further to the above, the pledge also includes the promise to publish one piece of research or thought-leadership piece each year describing how to achieve net zero greenhouse emissions.

Next year sees the global summit in Glasgow that will see further international focus placed on addressing climate change.
