Landmark deal sees universities buy electricity direct from wind farms.

07 October 2019

Following the signing of a £50m agreement, 20 UK universities will be able to buy energy direct from wind farms for the next 10 years.

Renewable energy from wind farms in Scotland and Wales will be provided to universities in areas including Newcastle, Exeter and Aberystwyth as part of the power purchase agreement (PPA).

According to The Guardian, it is the first time that public sector bodies have clubbed together to complete such a deal and it is assumed that this paves the way for others to follow in the future.

As part of the deal, brokered by The Energy Consortium and Squeaky Clean Energy, energy will be supplied at an agreed price for the next 10 years from a portfolio of British wind farms.

It is also part of the move by higher education facilities to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, following their declaration of a climate change emergency.

In addition to considerably reducing carbon emissions, the new deal sees universities provided with access to the energy purchasing market for the first time.

With climate change and sustainability proving to be ever more important for clients and service providers throughout the FM sector, the opportunity for more PPA deals linked to renewable energy seem highly likely to occur in the future.
