Data analysis reveals over £45m potential energy savings

03 October 2019

Having analysed the data from 4,150 sites around the UK, EDF Energy has stated that an average saving of £46,316 per annum could be achieved.

Collectively, this could amount to more than £45m savings through the introduction of "simple energy efficiency changes", said the company.

In addition to the financial benefits, the changes could result in reducing CO2 emissions by over 147,671 tonnes per annum, which equates to more than 80,000 flights between London and Sydney or offset measures such as planting 3.6m sq m of woodland.

The results were achieved through remote analysis of schools, hospitals, hotels, police stations and offices to understand the potential for efficiency and carbon reduction.

This revealed that up to 62% of sites could make considerable savings by installing energy efficient lighting, resulting in annual average savings of £10,800 and reducing carbon emissions by 24 tonnes per year.

Optimisation of operational schedules was also identified as another means to create savings for 61% of sites.

The company provided the example of turning heating systems off more promptly to reduce energy usage, with many more options available for consideration.

EDF further stated that energy efficiency will be a "crucial" element to support increased electrification and the switch to low carbon energy systems as part of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
