MKL Innovation. One of the fastest growing start-ups in the North of the UK

17 July 2019

So, who is in the driving seat of MKL?

Mark and John Parker; two hard-working brothers who wear their proud Yorkshireman heritage with pride. Based in Leeds, MKL has been established less than two years but has already had significant LFL revenue growth, doubled their team, office space and fleet – no mean feat in this current climate!

MKL has ‘success story’ written all over it. What is the secret to their success? There are some evident smart decisions. One half of the business has a very clear focus on electrical compliance. John ran his own electrical compliance business for decades. And it shows. The list of current clients is all big names – for this, they have ‘grafted’, working as contractors behind the scenes and earning a name for themselves as reliable hardworking and always delivering. Now they are working directly for clients in their own right. They call this the ‘bread and butter’ of their business.

In the other half of the business, they have their fingers in some very disruptive pies (or even pi’s). MKL are on a mission to drag facilities management into the digital age and have a clear vision on how to land this.

MKL’s cutting-edge energy management system sets out to revolutionise an organisation, purely by being able to report and forecast accurate energy data, using sensors and a user-friendly dashboard. The RoI figures are impressive; if you can measure it, you can understand it (and change it!), and there is always a saving to be had. As even legacy systems can be connected to newer systems, their clients have a completely connected view of all of their electrical assets. But what sets MKL apart from other FM companies? MKL don’t just report and monitor; their systems also learn and react in real time. If you have a hotel where customers consistently leave with the air-con on full whack and the window open; MKL’s kit can sense both these events and turn the air-con off remotely. It then turns back on when the temperature hits a threshold. It can trigger an alarm when a server room gets too hot or turn on a fan to cool it down. It can measure doors opening and closing, footfall or heat-map customer activity. The real world IoT applications seem endless. With the IoT market predicted to double by 2021, reaching $520B (Forbes), this is an exciting industry to be in!

And MKL want to share this slice of the pie with their clients – to seek out the RoI for each company. The company is well established as a one stop shop. They provide, install, commission and support the tech. A full end-to-end client offering that supports the safe pair of hands that MKL are known to be. Mark and John’s hard-working ethos can be felt in the disruptive, forward thinking and fun culture of the business.

MKL is really taking leaps and bounds into the future, leaving a legacy for their children and taking their clients with them on the IoT train. At the same time, they are making sure their bread and butter business of electrical compliance stays as the backbone, so that whatever the economic climate throws at them they will thrive. Smart.

There’s more… On launch of MKL, Mark and John had scoped a brand new product of their own. A solution not yet on the market. In July, they visited their technical partners, to see the new prototype and client dashboard. The product (which removes the “man in a van approach” to compliance) means it could save those with a large chunk of commercial or industrial real estate an absolute bomb every year. The product itself is veiled in secrecy until its official launch – but watch this space!
