Mental Health Awareness Week begins

Today sees the start of Mental Health Awareness Week 2019, hosted by the Mental Health Foundation charity and focusing on body image as this year's main focus.

Issues around mental health have been given more attention in recent years, with these efforts helping to make more people aware, provide reassurance and assist in gaining access to support.

An increasing number of businesses and organisations have become involved in this, with the result that more awareness of mental health in the workplace has been provided.

Part of the drive in this year's campaign is to encourage more people to join in raising awareness, with more information available on the Mental Health Foundation website.

In addition to a wide range of supporting information, the portal includes a free, downloadable supporter's pack.

This year's Mental Health Awareness Week will close on 19 May, with further efforts continuing throughout the year.

The Mental Health Foundation says that its studies last year showed that 30% of adults felt overwhelmed or unable to cope due to issues caused by body image, leading to the 2019 campaign focus.

Body image issues can affect anyone at any age, the charity states, and can directly impact on their mental health, with more research needed to gain more understanding.

In addition to publishing its own survey, the charity is aiming to examine body image issues with regard to how these affect people of all ages, gender, ethnicity and sexuality.

Its research will be used to assist in aiding individuals to improve their attitude towards body image.

There has been increasing efforts to raise awareness of mental health issues in the workplace, including statistics released by Peldon Rose to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week.

In addition to stating that 64% of employees have poor or below average mental wellbeing, the company says around 50% of workers would like yoga, meditation or exercise facilities to help deal with workplace stress.

While 95% believe the workplace environment is important for their mental health and wellbeing, 51% say it does not have a positive effect on mental health and 49% said the same regarding wellbeing.

A further 26% said they feel their employers do nothing to help them manage stress in the workplace.
