WEEE Guidance published by DTI
The long awaited Guidance Notes to support the WEEE Regulations have been published by the DTI. They cover the obligations placed on producers who put electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) on the UK market and on distributors. They also cover roles and implications for local authorities, the waste management industry, charitable and voluntary sector, users and consumers of EEE, and others.

Ken turns up the heat on climate change
Mayor Ken Livingston has declared that London must stabilise its carbon emissions by 2025 at 60% below the 1990 level. The Climate Change Action Plan announced last week is targeting an annual 4% reduction in emissions each year via greener homes, greener organisations, greener energy and greener transport.
"The present model of high energy production and high energy waste is utterly inefficient," he said.

LST acquires part of Royal Mail estate
Land Securities Trillium has bought 285 properties from Royal Mail in a £70m sale and leaseback deal. Some 108 properties are vacant and surplus to Royal Mail's operations and will be refurbished by LST for other users. The remaining 177 freehold properties, only partly used by Royal Mail, will be leased back by LST to Royal Mail for 15 years. The deal covers just 3% of Royal Mail's operating space.

Lend Lease in exclusive talks on Olympic Village construction
The ODA, London & Continental Railways and Westfield announced last week that they are in exclusive talks with the Lend Lease consortium to develop the Olympic village and Zones 2-7 of Stratford City which includes the Olympic Village and most of the scheme's legacy housing, commercial and hotel development. Westfield will undertake development on Zone 1 and the existing town centre. The Lend Lease consortium of East Thames Group, First Base and Crosby Lend Lease will start construction in early 2008.

Acquisition in Italian FM
Pirelli RE Facility Management (PREFM) has acquired Ingest Facility from Business Solutions (Fiat Group) for €50.3m. Ingest Facility offers integrated solutions to office, industrial and commercial buildings in Italy and Poland. PREFM is now the leading player in Italy where it provides facilities and support services to Banca Intesa, BNL, Carige, Deutsche Bank, Edison, Fiat Group, Global Value (IBM), Mediaworld, RAS, Telecom Italia, TNT, UniCrdeit and Vodafone, and Pirelli RE Group (15% of revenues) from 12 offices across the country.

Turkish link and British Embassy FM for Faceo
Faceo has concluded a cooperation agreement with a Turkish FM company, YKS, a subsidiary of Yapi Kredi Koray, a Turkish RE investment company. Faceo and YKS will co-operate on a mutual exclusive basis to develop FM activities across Turkey and Western Europe. Additionally, Faceo has been appointed by The Foreign & Commonwealth Office to provide FM services to the British Embassy in Paris, the first British Embassy to outsource its FM services. Faceo will provide cleaning and building maintenance services to the Embassy which hosts a variety of events attracting over 13,000 guests every year.

The Modern Built Environment Knowledge Transfer Network (MBE KTN) launched its website this week to demonstrates how it is developing links between research, industry, technology and building occupiers. Established by the DTI and comprising BRE, BSRIA, CIRIA and Arup, the MBE KTN is focussing on creating knowledge transference to benefit offices, healthcare and infrastructure. It will identify priority topics that have the potential to deliver a step-change in industry performance and client value in these sectors.

Amec wins NEC maintenance contract
Amec has been awarded a £30m, 5-year contract by NEC Group to provide M&E, and building fabric maintenance services to all its venues. These include the NEC exhibition centre, Symphony Hall, International Convention Centre and National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. The contract builds on a 27-year relationship with the NEC.

HSE fines NHS Trust for death
The HSE warned the NHS to maintain its properties effectively following the death of an 88-year old man who fell during a visit to Springfield University Hospital, London. The South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust were fined £7,500 and asked to pay £3,694 costs. The man fell in the hospital grounds fracturing his hip and wrist, but later died in hospital.

FM for housing PFI
Property services provider, Ian Williams has been awarded its first PFI working in partnership as a sub-contractor with Brent Coefficient Consortium to delivery full FM for 30 years to 500 new homes in the London Borough of Brent to be built by the consortium.
