EDF Energy appoints SPIE UK to help public, private carbon footprint

08 July 2013

EDF Energy has appointed SPIE UK as a national engineering contractor to support the energy company in meeting growing customer demand for its energy saving services. The partnership will see EDF Energy and SPIE UK work together to reduce the energy consumption of public and private sector buildings throughout the UK

As an approved supplier to Government Procurement Service, Scottish Procurement and other national frameworks, EDF Energy supplies electricity and energy efficiency services to the public sector.

Under a number of frameworks, EDF Energy bids for contracts to deliver guaranteed energy savings for local authorities, education providers, hospitals, leisure centres and other public and private sector bodies. EDF Energy and SPIE UK survey the buildings and prepare detailed proposals for introducing methods, technology or processes that will reduce the energy consumption or costs of those buildings before delivering the project. SPIE UK implements the agreed activities and EDF Energy, as the guarantor of the promised energy savings, undertakes the on-going measurement and verification of results. The first project has been completed at several schools in London and others are in the pipeline nationwide, covering a wide range of potential applications.

After a competitive selection process, SPIE UK was chosen for its complementary energy efficiency engineering design skills and national team of engineers with its SPIE Central Engineering and Energy team. SPIE UK brings to the relationship with EDF Energy a wealth of experience in designing and completing energy efficiency building and refurbishment work for a range of UK clients including education, airports and industrial facilities. These specialist capabilities and experiences are critical because each project is governed by a performance related contract in which SPIE UK and EDF Energy commit to deliver targeted energy savings.

Dan Bentham, Service Delivery Manager, EDF Energy, explains: “Our companies are both objective about the technologies we propose which suits our results focused approach to designing energy saving programmes for our customers. The partnership with SPIE UK adds a complementary set of engineering skills which means we can provide a wider range of energy saving technologies and practices to a greater number of customers.”

George Adams, Engineering Director, SPIE UK, says: “Our partnership with EDF Energy on energy refurbishment projects is testament to how SPIE UK has uniquely retained its engineering skills in this important field of helping reduce building energy costs and improve building performance significantly. At SPIE UK, we have the tools and skill-sets needed to address the challenges involved in refurbishing buildings that are of varying conditions, heavily used and important to their communities. We work independently of any suppliers or technologies, hence we consider all aspects thoroughly.”
