Cryptosporidium contamination - a potentially fatal problem

04 June 2013

Envirogen Water Technologies can help prevent the spread of cryptosporidiosis

Puresep, part of the Envirogen Water Technologies Group, has launched its range of specific ‘Crypto’ grade filters, that help prevent the spread of Cryptosporidiosis by removing Cryptosporidium from water used in the production of food and drink products.

As a predominantly waterborne disease, Cryptosporidium causes severe diarrhoea which can last up to two weeks in healthy adults. For the young, elderly and sick, the condition can be more serious. Water is used extensively in food and beverage production for product make-up, for rinsing and CIP.

If a manufacturer supplies contaminated food products, the legal and financial consequences can be extremely serious. Therefore many retailers are introducing cryptosporidium control into their process operations.

Envirogen Water Technologies provides a range of filters designed and qualified for cryptosporidium removal, including absolute rated depth and pleated filters. They say “these cartridges provide a simple, reliable and cost effective solution to a potentially fatal problem. They are specifically designed and qualified for cryptosporidium removal which is highly resistant to chlorine and other traditional chemical disinfectants.”

Meeting the requirements for food contact, as detailed in European Regulation (EC) Number 1935/2004, they are already being been used by many Food and Beverage manufacturers to help ensure their products are protected from cryptosporidium contamination.
