Housing Association wins Health & Safety Award

24 May 2013

Trent & Dove Housing, of Burton Upon Trent, has had its approach to occupational safety and health recognised in an awards scheme run by the safety charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)

Trent & Dove beat off competition from local authorities and public bodies to become Winners of the Public Service & Local Government Sector award in the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2013 held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel, at the National Exhibition Centre.

In 1993 RoSPA introduced competitive individual sector awards, presented annually, for the most outstanding performance in health and safety by a company or organisation within a particular industry or sector. Entrants must demonstrate a robust and high quality safety management system together with a minimum of four years' consistently excellent or continuously improving health and safety performance.

Under the leadership of Anna Hickman, Health and Safety Advisor at the social housing provider, changes to the organizations documented health and safety management systems have been improved significantly over the past years.

On receiving news of the win, Anna said: “We are delighted that our robust approach to occupational safety and health has been recognized by the nations leading authority on safety matters. As a company, we work hard to ensure that all colleagues and contractors embrace safe working practices across all sites and we are always looking at additional measures to develop our processes and improve our health & safety performance. ”.

“Earlier this year we became just the second housing association in the UK to be presented with a prestigious ‘platinum Level 4’ in the RoSPA Quality Safety Audit Awards (QSA). Winning the Public Service & Local Government Sector award, just 6 months later, is further validation of our team’s efforts.”

The RoSPA Awards scheme recognises commitment to accident and ill health prevention and is open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas. The scheme not only looks at accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, said: “RoSPA firmly believes that organisations that demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention deserve recognition. Trent & Dove Housing Limited has shown that it is committed to striving for such continuous improvement and we are delighted to honour it through the presentation of an award.”
