Pickerings Lifts marks 160 years in business at Liftex

08 May 2013

Next year Pickerings Lifts will reach a major milestone in the company’s history by turning 160 and celebrations are starting early, as the firm has announced plans to showcase its company heritage and contribution to championing UK manufacturing at this year’s LiftEx

Established in 1854 by Jonathan Pickerings, the company started life as a pulley, block and chain maker in the north east. Since then Pickerings Lifts has been noted for its innovation through the delivery of several industry firsts including the manufacturer of the first fully automatic push button lift and also being one of the founding members of the Lift & Escalator Industry Association (LEIA).

Today the company is the UK’s leading and largest independent lift manufacturer. It has over 300 employees, a new managing director at its helm, Ian Bowers, and operates across the whole of the England, Wales and Scotland. But while Pickerings Lifts may have grown in size and reach, one old traditional has stayed the same – its thirst for industry innovation.

Kirk Lawson, sales and marketing director at Pickerings Lifts comments: “Exhibitions have always been important to us so it’s great to see LiftEx make a come back this year. Back in 1888 we showcased our first electric lift at the Philadelphia Exhibition in the USA, Germany and Holland and this helped catapult our company and build upon our success.

“It also helped us demonstrate our passion for innovation, something which is still as alive today as it was then. We’re proud not to be a lift manufacture who doesn’t forces a square peg into a round hole simply because that’s all we can do, we can create something truly individual, relevant and bespoke to meet individual needs.”

To demonstrate this and their 160 years of UK based lift manufacturing within the industry, Pickerings Lifts will be at stand D74 at LiftEx from 22nd to 23rd May at the Excel London. There, visitors will be able to find out more about the company’s unique bespoke service and Pickerings Lifts’ nine divisional offerings which include Lift Access and Maintenance and Repair.
Visitors will also be able to see some of Pickerings Lifts earliest work, as the company will be exhibiting an original lift from the early 1800s in addition to one of its most recently manufactured bespoke products – both made at its UK based facility.
