MOSI joins Science Museum and Natural History Museum as Servest demonstrates capabilities

Servest has added to its collection of the country’s leading museums witha new contract at MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry, Manchester).

Servest already provides services to the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum in London - MOSI is part of the Science Museum group.

Services includeevent management, cleaning, portering, janitorial, pest control, waste management, security and washroom services. Servest employs around 110 people across the two museums.

At a recent British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) event, at another of Servest’s heritage sites Freemasons Hall in London, divisional managing director Les Turner spoke about some of the more interesting and unusual environments where the company provides services, including the Science Museum.

The museums have around 7.5m visitors coming through their doors every year,with 20,000 recorded on one day at the Science Museum during last year’s half term break. The high level of trafficplaces great demand on facilities management, particularly visitor reception, security, washrooms, cleaning and waste management.

In public buildings such as museums, Servest’s staff often have a customer facing role, even if that’s just being helpful and providing directions, so training is crucial and the company works closely with its clients on this.

Venues such as the Science Museum and Freemasons Hallhost several events a week, every weekas well as carrying out gallery and exhibit changes out of hours, which means that Servest needs to provide flexible rostering and support.

When the Natural History Museum’s futuristic Darwin centre opened in 2009, Servest used specialist high-level cleaning abseilers to attend to some of the hard to reach areas including the Coccoon. Servest staff were also on hand at the centre’s official opening by Prince William and David Attenborough.

Commenting on Servest’s work with museums, group development director, Andrew Sugars , said: “When we work with these prestigious museums we like to think we’re part of the team, ensuring that visitors get a great experience.”
