Compass Group UK & Ireland supports National Apprenticeship Week

08 March 2013

In support of National Apprenticeship Week (11 to 15 March), leading food and support service provider Compass Group UK & Ireland has organised an action packed week of activity in line with its over-arching theme, ‘Apprenticeships Deliver’, to showcase the achievements and benefits of apprenticeships

To kick the week off, on Monday 11 March four apprentices from across the business will descend on the Compass Innovation Centre in Chertsey for the annual apprentice cook off1, which will be judged by an expert panel, including Executive Chef for Compass Group UK & Ireland, Nick Vadis.

Wednesday 13 March will see Compass apprentices showcasing their talents at ‘Made by Apprentices’; an event hosted by the Deputy Prime Minister to thank people and organisations that have supported and contributed to making apprenticeships successful over the past year. These apprentices will make a selection of canapés to be served during the evening, showcasing the amazing new culinary talent within Compass.

On 14 March, 45 delegates from Compass’ internal management development programme, Evolve, will attend a formal graduation to receive certificates from Ian Sarson, Managing Director of Compass Group UK & Ireland. The Evolve programme plays a key role in developing Compass’ future business leaders and offers unit based managers an opportunity to build their knowledge, capability and career with Compass.

Additionally, Compass will be attending ‘Berkshire Apprenticeship Adventures’, at Legoland Windsor on Thursday 14 March, to showcase apprenticeships to young people. The event, organised by the National Apprenticeship Service, is the first ever pan-Berkshire event. It will be attended by pupils from 16 schools, across six unitary authorities and is also open to all 16–24 year olds from the area including those that are currently not in education, employment or training.

Ian Sarson, Managing Director of Compass Group UK & Ireland said: “Great people are at the very core of our business and are fundamental to its success. As someone who started their career within foodservice through an industry qualification and a passion for great food, I strongly believe we have a responsibility to equip people with the right skills and opportunities, enabling them to develop their careers in this brilliant and exciting industry. Compass is committed to providing apprenticeships and training to grow talent at every level throughout the business, and I’m delighted to celebrate the achievements of our people this National Apprenticeship Week.”

Compass has been an enthusiastic supporter of apprenticeship programmes since 2006 and offers a comprehensive learning and development curriculum across hospitality, support services, professional cookery, customer service, management, security and more. Last year, 1,600 people gained nationally recognised qualifications with Compass. In August 2012, Compass launched The Chefs Academy; a two year programme offering 16-18 year olds the opportunity to develop their culinary skills and earn while they learn, to help prepare them with essential life and business skills required for further employment and progression.
