Are renewables the answer

Not the usual sort of content for FM Report, but the following event does have relevance for FMs thinking about the consequences of employing alternative energy sources

A meeting of the IET will take place on 3 October 2012 7:00pm at The Adelaide Pub, Teddington, London. The subject of the talk, given by power distribution engineer Bernard Quigg is ‘Can you make money while saving the planet? (Dispersed generation and the distribution network)’

The UK distribution network design was standardised in the late 1940s and 1950s. While there are some variations in different regions the philosophy is that power flows from high to low voltages. Useful savings have been obtained for 50 years based on a design using modest fault levels, voltage regulation and cable cross sections. Injecting power from such generation as renewables, low down in the distribution network upsets a very substantial apple cart. The renewables or even small scale CHP tend to have low load factors. The energy may only be available when it is not useful on the local network. This talk is based on a typical 1MVA generator embedded in the distribution network. It looks at the issues involved in such a project as well as selling short term reserve services to the National Grid. The issues can be critical to project execution and economics. The delays reported in connecting a small hydro scheme at Windsor Park in July 2012 would appear to be on similar issues.'

Bernard Quigg FIET, CDipAf, McLellan and Partners Ltd. Bernard is a power distribution engineer with extensive experience on industrial and public power systems covering commercial and technical issues. Much of this has been international. Being of considerable antiquity, he has had the opportunity to design, build, commission and operate high and low voltage networks at voltages from 110V to 150kV. As an industrial electrical engineer he has also designed and operated the equipment used for a variety of applications including very large motors, building services and control systems. Activities related to the topic include connecting standby generators to sell short term reserve services to the National Grid, Triad management, advising on connection arrangements for a 5MW PV schemes and debugging a 1MW CHP scheme. He is currently a member of the IET Power Generation, Conversion and Utilisation Professional Network committee.
