RICS takes standard steps

09 May 2012

RICS has appointed a new member board and opened a global industry consultation on its Strategic Facilities Management Standards to help drive professionalism and recognition of the value of FM to business. RICS is calling on FM professionals to shape the industry’s first Strategic Facilities Management Standards, prior to their being published in late 2012.

The emerging FM standards are designed to provide greater certainty and consistency in FM services including catering, cleaning, building maintenance and security. They form part of a wider campaign in markets around the world to fuel recognition, understanding and demand throughout both the business and real estate sector for the added value and optimum performance that FM professionals can deliver to business.

The Standards Suites open for consultation (which ends on May 24th 2012) include Facilities Management Core Principles, the Strategic Role of Facilities Management in Business Performance, and a Facilities Management Positioning Paper. Johnny Dunford, RICS Global Commercial Property Director, said: “The success and relevance of these Standards depends on how they are shaped and used by service providers and clients around the world. For this reason, we are asking Facilities Management experts to come forward and review our proposed industry standards; to challenge, enhance, and add to them.”

The consultation comes as RICS announces the appointment of its new Facilities Management board – the first time RICS has had a full professional group board for FM. The board will be chaired by Iain Brodie, General Manager Facilities at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
