Lighting up student digs

08 February 2012

Riegens has supplied its Cirrus pendant luminaires for the new Charles Morris Halls student accommodation, located at the Leeds University Campus, and part of a £21m project is being constructed to the highest specification.

Situated around a courtyard landscaped garden, the development is a mixture of two new half hexagon-shaped blocks and a refurbishment of existing buildings which will sympathetically blend the Victorian, Georgian and 60’s architectural buildings together. With completion due for September 2010, the Halls, which have been awarded a “very good” BREAM rating, will offer over 450 spacious, contemporary design individual bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities that include excellent storage/work space, data access points and room safes. Included in the construction are 23 rooms that have been specially adapted for the disabled. The rooms will be offered to the many conference delegates that visit Leeds out of term time.

Installed by Airedale Electrical, Leeds, Riegens Cirrus pendants have been utilised in corridors within the halls of residence. The slim, circular Cirrus luminaires have a modern, clean line and are wire suspended. Cirrus offers excellent light distribution, with direct light to ceilings channeled through slots in the powder grey finish metal housing and direct accent light using 22W and 40W T5 lamps. Riegens Cirrus is available with various control gear options including include HF, HF Dim/DALI, Switch & Dim.

Editorial note: I have to confess, one reason this story caught my eye was because I remember the Charles Morris halls well from my time at Leeds University. The crowning glory of my football career being victory in the campus cup final for Henry Price, beating ‘Charlie Mo’ 3 – 1. It was a bit like the boat race – the same two teams always reached the final!
