Choppers chop landfill waste

18 January 2012

Helicopter manufacturer AgustaWestland recently invested in almost 1100 recycling bins at its Yeovil plant with the support of OCS and Leafield Environmental, to minimise landfill waste and improve its green credentials.

The AgustaWestland plant in Somerset houses some 3500 employees who design, manufacture and test helicopters and components for both commercial and military applications.

Louise Webb, Deputy Site Manager with OCS, said: “we have been managing the office cleaning at AgustaWestland for some time and AgustaWestland agreed that the recycling opportunities needed upgrading to a smarter solution, the basic swing bins and under-desk bins were not meeting recycling targets.”

In November 2010, OCS invited Leafield Environmental via OCS Wasteline to demonstrate a selection of internal recycling bins for office and amenity locations on the site. Vince Wright, Area Sales Manager for Leafield Environmental presented the Envirobin range for internal recycling against two major competitors.

After a short trial where OCS cleaners and staff from AgustaWestland tested a selection of recycling bins, the Envirobins were judged to be the best and most suitable product due to ease of use, aesthetics and professionalism.

AgustaWestland and OCS chose the Envirobin Mini (55 litres) and Midi (82 litres) which were sited at central recycling locations in offices, kitchens and conference areas. Under-desk bins were replaced with Desktop Recyclers also from Leafield.

The 6-phase installation project was launched in November 2010 with an initial purchase of 600 Envirobins and 5000 Desktop Recyclers. The project concluded in 2011 with the final delivery on 31st October.

Clive Baker, Disposal Coordinator at AgustaWestland commented: “We now have almost 1100 Envirobins in place, which have helped the recycling rate to increase from 69% in 2010 to 82% in 2011 and resulted in less waste being sent to landfill. Financially and environmentally it’s a win-win situation”.
