Masters of Storage

01 November 2011

As one of the top 20 Universities in the UK and with a worldwide reputation for pioneering education and research programmes the University of Liverpool has embarked on a £350 million building and facilities scheme to maintain its image and appeal

Naturally one of the key areas for quality access is the new Sydney Jones Library and in particular the various storage requirments which have been the subject of a very postive partnership with the specialist Britsh company Railex Projects.

With some 27000 students from 100 contries studying 400 different courses, the Library prides itself on truly being all things to all people in terms of the different media and formats avialable. If we take a whistle-stop tour of the Railex input then the scale of achievement can be tangibly recognised.

The Music section has been fitted with three DesignLine cabinets at a comfortable 1282mm height and each with eight wide drawers on telescopic runners accommodating a total of 2880 CDs. In turn 43 bays of Cantilver shelving 2100mm high and fitted with instantly adjustable shelves plus dividers and end brackets offer an impressive 194 linear metres of storage. The Archaeological area features notable purpose built open fronted DesignLine cabinets 860mm high x 1000mm wide x 700mm deep divided in to four distinct locations to avoid damge and protect the books. These are constructed of 1.2mm 18 gauge zinc coated steel for strength and stability which also allows the cabinet tops to perform as work surfaces without additional support. And Legally speaking, this department houses 478 bays of Cantilver Library Shelving again 2100mm high with six to seven adjustable shelves plus dividers and brackets, augmented by 78 Low Level Bays at less than half the height and providing a total of 2973 Storage Linera Metres.

The overall effect is neatly summed by the logistics supervisor who observes “ It has been a massive and challenging refurbishment and it has been a great asset to have the single source of expertise and supply from Railex with whom we have had previous very reliable attention. By the very nature of our role it was vital that no disruption took place and that life could carry on as pretty well normal. The oversize cabinets in Archaeology are especially impressive and brilliant in concept and are typical of the enhancement of the stimulating environment”.
