Refurbishment on a Grand Scale in Covent Garden

Meeting the challenge of replacing the existing air conditioning and heating system in a 5-star Covent Garden hotel certainly required a high level of careful design and planning, in a quick timescale… and road closures!

Space Airconditioning plc, the UK Daikin Distributors, were nominated to supply the replacement air conditioning systems at a top class hotel in Covent Garden, London as part of an extensive refurbishment programme; a project that involved a number of interesting challenges!

The 137 bedroom, 5-star hotel’s existing air conditioning system had to be fully decommissioned and removed in various phased works for the major strip out, which necessitated road closures for craneage access.

Space Air supplied Daikin’s air-cooled stepless screw chiller - EWAD320AJYNN, with total heat recovery option. 193 FWM 4-pipe fan coil units were installed throughout the hotel, serving not only the bedrooms but also restaurants, bars, conference facilities and back of house. Space Air pre-fitted valve sets and controls and configured all the fan coil units for left or right hand connection as required, to simplify installation. The FWM fan coil units were selected for their low noise levels and ease of installation as they fitted perfectly into the bedroom bulkheads. While cooling the rooms, the rejected heat is recovered via the optional heat recovery heat exchanger and transferred to the hotel’s hot water system, operating in parallel with the existing boiler.

The 300kW Daikin chiller operates in conjunction with a second Daikin chiller supplied by Space Air at an earlier stage in the project.

12 Daikin VAM1000F, heat recovery ventilation units provide ventilation throughout the building. These units were installed externally so Space Air fitted their unique VAM weather proofing kit, just one of a comprehensive range of accessories they design and manufacture in-house.

Space Airconditioning’s specification and design solutions, combined on site support, greatly assisted the installation on a floor-by-floor programme of works in challenging conditions. The project was completed within a quick timeframe, and the client is reported to be delighted with the result.
