Sabien Technology and M2G help UCLandeliver on its 2015 C02 target

26 May 2011

Sabien Technology’s M2G intelligent boiler load optimisers are reducing gas consumption at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) by an average of 9% with payback expected in just under1.5 years.

Installation of M2G forms part of a wide ranging programme of energy-saving initiatives at the University, which has achieved the Carbon Trust Standard. It is forecast that M2G will reduce CO2 emissions by 955 tonnes over the next 5 years.

Initially UCLan carried out a pilot of M2G during the 2010 heating season, which was one of the coldest on record. Since the pilot, M2G has been deployedin a further five buildings including installation to atmospheric, forced draught and modern modulating boilers. In each case M2G hasbeen fully integrated with the existing building management systems (BMS).

“At first there was some confusion about whether fine-tuning the BMS would control boiler dry cycling butfurther investigation showed the BMS was unable to deliver what Sabien’s M2G provides,” recalled UCLan Energy Manager Ruth Taylor. “We also sought reference fromanother English university who were producing some very good results and paybacks using M2G,” she added.

“As part of our procurement policy we would usually ask at least three companies to tender but the fact that there are no equivalent technologies to M2G enabled us to obtain a waiver for the procurement process,” Ruth Taylor continued.

In 2008 UCLan became one of only two universities to gain the coveted Carbon Trust Standard. More recently UCLan has developed and implemented an environmental management system to ISO 14001:2004 standard. UCLan is now one of only five higher education institutions to hold both ISO 14001 and Carbon Trust Standard accreditation.
