Increasingly, businesses are experiencing losses and disruptions from extreme and severe weather. Summer heat waves, severe cold weather, surface water flooding and subsidence are current and growing risks. What does this mean for the business community? How can you make your business operation more resilient to the impacts of these risks and gear your business to be better adapted to face the unexpected?

Workshop Title: 'Business Resilience and Adaptation'
Date: Tuesday 5th April 2011; Time: 9am – 5pm
Venue: Queen Mary Studio Room 015 -023, Greenwich Campus, London SE10 9LS

This workshop will focus on the impacts to your business of extreme weather events and provide you with the tools to assess these risks and prioritise action. The workshop will be conducted by the Sustainable Built Environment Research Group at the University of Greenwich and involve findings and tools emerging from the UK Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council funded project: Community Resilience to Extreme Weather (CREW)

Content:

 Introduction to Extreme Weather, Adaptation and Resilience: The basics
 Assessing business implications of Extreme Weather Events
 A new Risk Assessment Framework for SME’s
 Evaluating risk and developing effective Business Contingency Plans
 Practical guidance to improving company resilience
 Measuring Adaptive Capacity
 Case Study: Application to Social Housing
The day will involve a mixture of formal presentations and hands-on workshops where delegates will be able to assess their companies’ resilience to Extreme Weather Events.

For participants to understand the business case for resilience
Forr participants to be able the identify and address key exposures in their operations

Each business is entitled to 4 hours of follow up support with the academic team. Starting with a site visit this will be geared to producing a detailed survey and bespoke risk assessment and action package to identify and improve your business’s resilience.
