Energy Management – you don’t need to be Einstein, or do you?

11 March 2010

When Albert Einstein said, "everything is a never ending process of energy transformation," how aware of the future connotations of his words could he have been? With resource, environmental, security and supply issues having all raised their heads in recent years is the energy transformation needed is now just as much one of management as it is the physical.

Particularly with energy, the voluntary Corporate Responsibility (CR) merits to be gained have become substantially replaced with "must do" regulation. And within this our building stock is particularly targeted with energy performance certification (EPCs and DECs) and the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC), just two examples.

Forthcoming legislation is considering increasing the buildings captured by such requirements, so by 2013 it is possible that all UK buildings will be under some form of energy regulation. With our targets running through to 2050, it is also not likely to be just a short-term issue.

Managing your organisations energy is now a true triple bottom line need; it is also a fundamental business continuity issue. In addition to new offerings such as BREEAM In-use and BS EN 16001 providing further environmental/energy management support, increasing numbers of commercial buildings are having DECs performed on them, even though they are not legally required to do so. Could this kind of reverse thinking also be the start of a different form of business environmental transformation? And if so where are you?
