Turn on to the biggest ‘Turn Off’

10 December 2009

FMs could save three percent of their energy bills by switching off over the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Timely advice from FEFA – Fresh Eyes Facilities Assistance -  is that by planning to  ‘switch off’ over the Christmas and New Year holidays could save 3 percent on utility bills, effectively negating any inflationary price increases in 2010. On average offices will close on the 24th December and probably not open until the morning of the 4th January. That is 10 days when you can save by switching equipment off.
It may turn cold and threaten freezing pipes but if your heating or BMS has a frost setting, you could save all the energy used to heat the building and just boost it on Monday  4th January to get the office warm again.
Send around a reminder to turn off PCs, Screens and Printers on Christmas Eve and  spend a little time checking on a ‘walk around’ before the office closes. Of course, if you you may have a PCs Circuit that you could turn off and save the walk around.
Does your office need the fridges and vending machines on all holiday? No one will be there to buy a drink or eat so get them off and use the time to clean them out.
What outside lights do you not need on over Christmas? And there is no need for urinals to automatically flush all holiday.
As attention is focused on the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen FEFA suggests that by switching off now Santa may have more snow to run his Sledge on in future. for more details contact mailto:contactFMsupport@fefa.org.uk
