‘Clouds’ and more at Worktech09

15 October 2009

Research into the implications of the latest ‘cloud’ computing technology for the future design and usage of the modern building is among the highlights of Worktech09 conference to be held next month at the British Library.

News this week that Rentokil Initial had signed up with Google in the software giant’s biggest ever Google Apps deal, demonstrates a growing trend identified in new research to be announced at Worktech09, the annual conference at The British Library in London that focuses on the latest trends in workplaces and ways of working.
Google’s announcement said that it will deploy Google Apps to all of Rentokil Initial’s 78,000 employees across over 50 countries in the largest deployment of the service to date. The new platform will provide a single web-based communication and collaboration suite to replace the Group’s existing 180 email domains and 40 mail systems across its six operating divisions.  The move is part of the Rentokil Initial’s five year turnaround plan to enhance capability and introduce operational excellence and will have a dramatic impact on the company’s extensive mobile workforce.
According to Peter Bowen of Cordless Consultants who has written an article due to appear in PFM magazine next month concurrently with Worktech09, the advent of ‘Cloud’ computing as a viable alternative to traditional locally based application services has arrived. He identifies an upward trend in the technology which provides ‘software and storage on demand’ generally from a secure remote purpose built location. As the Rentokil Initial deal demonstrates, ‘Google’ has seen the potential for the adoption of this approach and have already made serious inroads to developing purpose built facilities to deliver these services over the internet.
The new study between Cordless Consultants, Pringle Brandon and Turner & Townsend to be announced at Worktech09, examines what will be left in buildings if applications, data processing and data storage migrate to data centres as cloud computing takes off, and looks at benefits to occupiers and developers.
WorkTech09 is the 6th annual conference looking at implications of convergence between the worlds of technology, real estate, work and the workplace. It is a forum for all those involved in the future of work and the workplace as well as real estate, technology and innovation.  Speakers include Mark Dixon, Founder & CEO, Regus: David Camp, CEO, Stanhope; Roger Madelin, Joint CEO, Argent; David Martin, Founder of SMART technologies; David Firth, Author; Lesley Gavin, Futurologist, BT; Philip Vanhoutte, MD EMEA, Plantronics, Guy Holden, VP and GM, Johnson Controls Global Workplace Solutions; and Simon Ward, Group Property Director, Barclays,
Alongside the WorkTech09 conference will be an innovation exhibition where companies will demonstrate new technologies, innovations and future visions. Zones will allow people to explore and experience new technology, furniture and accessories in an environment that is designed to stimulate new ideas and thinking.
