DALKIA TACKLES THE COST OF CRC WITH CARBONCARE

09 July 2009

Dalkia CarbonCare provides organisations with a solution to reducing their energy use in preparation for the forthcoming Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC). Dalkia recognises that organisations not previously covered by one of the existing levies on energy use and carbon emissions will find themselves subject to a new set of extensive fees and charges, presenting a real incentive for them to find ways of reducing their energy use.

Dalkia CarbonCare is an integrated approach to energy management that aims to improve efficiency and free up cost. It does this by paying close attention to the small details in the way an organisation uses its energy. The benefits of CarbonCare will become core aspirations for those organisations qualifying for the CRC.

The CRC will apply to all organisations where the total half-hourly metered electricity use for 2008 was 6,000 MWh or over. The scheme applies to the highest parent company and therefore it must report on the aggregated emissions from all subsidiary companies, which as a minimum require an emissions coverage of at least 90% of the total energy use emissions covered by the CRC, Climate Change Agreements, or the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.

The CRC commences its first Phase in April 2010 and all organisations must register for the CRC during 2010. Failure to do so, and failure to comply with the payment and reporting requirements of the scheme thereafter will result in heavy penalties. As an outsourced energy management partner, Dalkia is ideally placed to bring its understanding of the requirements to its customers and prepare them for compliance, but also cost savings as they prepare for the scheme.

This track record is the result of Dalkia’s impressive knowledge as a global energy services provider. Dalkia is able to handle all elements of an organisation’s energy requirements – from onsite generation including plant design, installation and maintenance, to supply, management and emissions trading.

Dalkia CarbonCare helps customer organisations to take an active stance on their energy utilisation as a way of working towards reduced carbon emissions. In doing so, customers of Dalkia CarbonCare are seeing significant cost savings, which will enable them to spend less on carbon allowances under the new CRC.

Unlike other services, Dalkia CarbonCare can be applied to any organisation in any sector and services are grouped into three main areas specifically designed to identify the carbon footprint of sites and buildings, reduce consumption and utilise sources of clean energy such as CHP and biomass.

The services include energy and environmental auditing, operational energy efficiency and strategies that cover the application of modern control technology, installation and management of energy plant and compliance with the requirements of schemes such as the CRC, Climate Change Levy and EU Emissions Trading scheme.

The wide ranging Dalkia CarbonCare capabilities extend over BMS, hot water, HVAC, lighting, energy procurement, combined heat and power, refrigeration, standby generation, sustainable energy, compressed air, demand side management and bill validation.

Andy Lemon, Head of Energy Legislative Development for Dalkia, said: “Most organisations have limited experience of carbon emissions trading and compliance and will be hit with this issue and costs for the first time under the CRC. This will create a real drive for organisations to find ways of predicting and reducing their annual energy use in order to result in lower payments for fewer emissions allowances.

“There is a common perception among organisations that implementing sustainable carbon saving measures is a costly process, leading many to delay on taking action. The CRC will be a catalyst for this change and Dalkia’s proven expertise and proactive involvement with its customers’ operations means that we can recommend, implement and carry out a range of measures which will generate substantial guaranteed savings across the organisation as well as under the CRC requirements.”
