DENIOS FLIES HIGH

03 February 2009

It is an unwritten rule of successful business that the more sophisticated and quality driven the customer, then equally they will look towards suppliers who can – literally – deliver the same ethos. Hence the recent very effective collaboration between the global leaders in their sectors of Airbus and Denios.

Every new Airbus design is the result of combined international achievement. Before a new Airbus can lift off, all of its parts and components pass through numerous manufacturing stations, travelling from France to Spain and England, and all the way to Germany. The mounting of hydraulic and pneumatic fixtures and air – conditioning technology in the Airbus is carried out in Hamburg at the very end. Denios has now enhanced this area of work with a very clever and special solution, by virtue of building a unique, legally-compliant colour mixing chamber that is equipped with F90 – 90 minute fireproofing.

This essentially stems from Denios ongoing international experience with all appropriate brand names, especially in the area of hazardous materials storage, whilst also having the vital knowledge and awareness of adapting to each country’s regulations. Therefore, alternative solutions such as the Airbus colour mixing chamber always commence with a comparison of functional specification requirements and the laws that are in effect. Ultimately, just one thing matters to Airbus Industries and all other Denios customers: after building its storage units: Denios offers total support with all approvals and regulatory inspections.

At the start of this particular project, Airbus Industries in Hamburg defined specific requirements for the new colour mixing chamber, based upon their exacting factory standards. In one area in which cavity sealings are checked and post-processing is carried out, dyes and glues are also processed and it is here where all hazardous substances must be stored. The container itself also needed to be designed as its own fire compartment. In addition, employee safety required the extraction of all fumes generated. The Denios team presented by way of a notable solution a custom-made container that is, in essence, an accessible F90 storage cabinet with integrated fire protection. The 90 minute factor was actually implemented on five sides. Some of the interior features include a separate HAZMAT cabinet, a dip tank and a workbench with air extraction.“With the Airbus container, Denios was able to combine two core aspects at the same time” explains Michael Keune, Project Engineer at Denios “ On the one hand, we were able to use our know-how of F90 fire proofing and on the other hand we incorporated our air technology competence during development to form a truly efficient unit.” After only 10 weeks of construction time, Airbus was presented with the container at the so called “long range” equipment assembly facility. And in order to ensure its economical delivery , Denios engineers also took into account transportation friendly dimensions.

The delivery was affected in one single piece as an oversize load. Immediately after arriving in Hamburg, Denios took care of the container’s set - up and commissioning. Just one day later, the clever container was fully intregated into the production cycle. All of which earned high commendation from Airbus for the Denios engineering expertise. And when airplanes such as the new A-380 take off around the world in future, a small contribution from Denios will also be flying on board. Aftr all, high safety in the air begins with small steps on the ground.
