BIFM chair takes up new challenge

10 October 2008

Iain Murry, the recently appointed chairman of BIFM, is to join Scottish-based Chard Construction to set up its new FM division and serve as its managing director from December.

Murray, who launched Jenkins & Marr Facilities Management in 2004 before selling it to the SMC Group in 2006, will be an equity holder in the new enterprise.

Chard has grown organically since commencing activities in 1982. It is now one of Scotland's leading construction companies, yet it is still privately managed and many of the original key people remain.

Chard Construction has a turnover of £50 million of which £5m is earned by its maintenance division which will be the core of the new FM division. It has offered M&E services and reactive maintenance primarily in the retail sector, but Murray plans to take the business beyond this sector into a total FM business with sustainability at its core.

Murray told PFM that he will continue all his commitments as BIFM Chairman planned for his two year term and will be attending IFMA's World Workplace conference next week in Houston, Texas.
