04 September 2008

Operon has begun a £20m, 28-year FM contract for the new 20,000m² Oncology and Haematology Development Centre, a new centre for cancer and blood disorders, at Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham, Hull.

The £65m Centre, which opened in August, and provides treatment and palliative care for patients with cancer and blood disorders, and is one of the most significant recent capital investments in the local region.

Operon will deliver the building and M&E maintenance, grounds maintenance, lifecycle replacement and energy management. Operon Catering will provide café and retail outlets for patients, staff and the wider community, under its ‘Options’ brand.

The new hospital, which has a health centre, pharmacy and psychological support unit, will serve a wide catchment area, from Scarborough in the north to Scunthorpe and Grimsby in the south and Goole to the west. The Radiotherapy Department within the new centre will boast six linear accelerators, three Pre-Treatment suites and a dedicated Patient Information and Support Centre.

Landscaping has been a key element of the design process with garden areas and rooftop gardens providing numerous spaces for patients to relax during their treatment and recovery.

David Haire, director of Business Development and Strategy for Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “The Oncology and Haematology Development Centre will be one of the leading facilities in Europe, with the local population having access to the most up to date services in a state of the art environment. We are looking forward to developing a strong working relationship with the Operon team who will help us deliver these services and ensure that the high standards for patients, their families and staff will be maintained.”

Stuart Craig, PFI operations director, Operon, said: “We are delighted to be given the opportunity to work with the Trust on such a strategically important and innovative facility and we look forward to a long and successful partnership.”
