7 DAY FURNISH IKEA'S CATERING

04 September 2008

Furniture giant IKEA has extended its relationship with contract catering company 7 Day Catering, with the award of a new contract in respect of IKEA’s Peterborough distribution centre. The all-new facilities integrate manned catering and vending and have been designed to service the requirements of nearly 600 staff; working days, evenings and week-ends.

IKEA sets great store in its catering facilities. As part of their employment conditions, IKEA staff are entitled to a free, healthy meal every day and the company is keen to encourage as many people as possible to take up their offer.

IKEA’s Graham Hyde is delighted with 7 Day Catering’s achievements. He said: “7 Day Catering have been operating for some time at our distribution centre in Thrapston and their results in that location have been outstanding. I was confident that the company could match that performance here and that’s why I appointed them.

“Prior to launching their operation, I was impressed that 7 Day Catering sent an executive chef along to work with the staff that were transferring to them. He made sure that they were familiar with the new menus and that they were aware of the standards 7 Day Catering set themselves, in terms of quality, presentation and service delivery.

“Not only is the facility more attractive than it was previously, there has also been a noticeable improvement in service quality and the overall pride taken to deliver.”

Mr. Hyde is quick to add that service improvement has not been restricted to the customer facing staff. “I’ve been extremely impressed with 7 Day Catering’s support and professionalism right from the word go,” he said. “Communication has been very quick and effective. I’ve given them a couple of problems to deal with that, strictly speaking, are not in their remit, but they have handled them sympathetically. For instance, a food vending machine had to be replaced at very short notice and 7 Day Catering organised a new one at the drop of a hat, with no disruption to service.”

Martyn Stockwin, General Manager at 7 Day Catering, is responsible for IKEA’s operation and is justifiably proud of his ‘new baby’. “With nine staff employed, this is a relatively large operation and it is extremely gratifying that IKEA’s management and staff are so pleased with our efforts. The key now is to grow the role and, in our staff, support the IKEA values.”
