Preparations begin to include hydrogen in gas network

11 January 2021

Hydrogen will be introduced into the gas network in a pilot project for 670 homes in Winlaton in Gateshead, as the UK prepares to increase its use of more environmentally-friendly fuel.

This will represent an important step in reducing carbon dioxide emissions and achieving net zero carbon status by 2050.

The project will include introducing 20% hydrogen into the gas network, according to ITV News and is the result of a partnership between Northern Gas Networks, energy company Cadent and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Preparation works have begun and the trial is due to begin in April and continue for 10 months.

It also represents another step in the government's 10-point plan produced last November, which sets out the stages it aims to focus on to achieve net carbon zero.

With hydrogen set to be introduced into the gas network, there will be more implications for commercial premises and the FM sector, as the UK continues its drive to reduce emissions.

Facilities are planned to increase the production of hydrogen, which is more environmentally-friendly than any fossil fuel, which will have considerable impact on the UK's aims to achieve its legally-binding 2050 target.
