Facilities prepare for next phase of Covid-19 restrictions

01 December 2020

With the latest lockdown in England coming to an end tomorrow, the FM sector is preparing for the next stage in the fight to contain the Coronavirus pandemic.

For the areas designated as tier 3 in England and the higher tiers in Scotland, there will be little immediate change, although some facilities will feel they are able to reopen partially or begin planning for increased activity in the future.

While the majority of FMs will have implemented all the requirements advised by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), those tasked with reopening facilities may wish to view the advice it provides.

The first action to take is to complete a risk assessment for each facility to identify where actions are required to ensure each workplace complies with Covid-19 guidance.

Facilities users should be able to keep 2m apart or, if this is not possible, 1m apart using risk mitigation.

Updating cleaning regimes and installing hand sanitisers is another requirement, with some facilities requiring attendees to wear face coverings at all times unless seated at their desk.

Clear and regular communication with everyone using the facility is also advised by the HSE, to provide the necessary explanations and reassurance that the workplace is safe to attend.

Support should also be provided to all colleagues working from home, with the HSE again providing more detailed advice on its website.

HSE inspectors are continuing to visit premises to ensure that they are complying with the various requirements above. More information and advice is available here.
