Health inspectors close down facilities following discovery of legionella

10 February 2020

Hotel facilities on the Isle of Wight have been shut down on the order of environmental health officers and the local council has confirmed this was due to the discovery of legionella bacteria.

The council has also confirmed it has launched an investigation at the Melville Hall Hotel and Utopia Spa in Sandown, according to the County Press website.

Legionella bacteria had been found in the swimming pool and hot tubs at the hotel in "high levels", resulting in health officers visiting the facility and closing it to visitors.

According to the County Press, a guest was swimming in the pool at the time of the health officers' visit and had been been told to leave it immediately.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council said legionella bacteria had been found to be present at "an undesirable level" in the spa and pool leisure facilities at the hotel.

It further stated that the facilities had been closed "pending ongoing investigations", however the County Press news item further stated that a spokesperson for the Melville Hall Hotel said it had received "no proof" of the contamination.
