Joint industry effort for smart commercial building analysis

Development has begun on the IoT-enabled Real-time Energy Analytics Platform (i-REAP) by the University of West England (UEW Bristol) with funding provided by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

The two year, collaborative project is being led by engineering company TerOpta and is also supported by Costain, with the intention of providing energy efficiency advice to businesses.

Collaborative efforts between the partners is aimed at analysing the energy and providing cost efficiency for the running of commercial buildings.

Five test sites around the UK have been provided by Costain, which will see Internet of Things (IoT) sensors installed to gather data for use by the i-REAP system.

Up to 80 sensors will be installed inside the facilities, measuring temperature, humidity and ambient light intensity, and four outside to measure temperature, humidity, wind speed and solar radiance.

Data will be gathered over six months and analysed by researchers at UWE Bristol as part of a feasibility study of the facilities.

This will include assessment of heating systems and their positioning, staff seating, office structure and orientation, facade materials and insulation of the buildings.

Once the analysis has been completed, the aim of the project is to provide an overview of the current level of operation of the systems in place and how these could be made more energy efficient and cost effective.

UWE Bristol principal researcher Professor Lukumon Oyedele said: "This project contributes to fast-forwarding the adoption of AI and IoT for energy savings and looks to help the building sector to move from 'reactive' to 'predictive' approaches in developing guidelines for ideal retrofitting actions and low carbon heating."

It is hoped that the project will assist others in utilising IoT and Artificial Intelligence in the drive to increase energy efficiency throughout the commercial building sector.
