Mental and physical wellbeing seen as essential by employers

Employers in the manufacturing sector have shown a high percentage of concentration on the mental and physical health of employees, according to a recent survey.

This is seen as a duty by 85% of respondents, with more than 90% investing in employee health and wellbeing having seen increases in productivity and improved relations with the workforce.

Investment in this area has funded initiatives including counselling, health screening and mental health first aiders by 90% of companies investing in professional occupational health.

Investment sums in this area have exceeded £30,000, mostly by the larger organisations, further extended with assisting workers returning to work after sickness.

More than 80% of companies stated they provide voluntary sick pay and 80% said they offer phased and flexible working arrangements for those returning from long-term sickness.

The methods described above are also seen as assisting companies in dealing with the widely-publicised skills shortage in all sectors, along with rapid technological change and an ageing workforce.

Beneficial results have been recorded by the majority of those completing the survey, including reduced absenteeism levels.

The Health, wealth and wellbeing for Manufacturers survey was conducted by Make UK and Howdens and is published today.
