Welsh infrastructure 2020 aims published

28 November 2019

Following its formation last year, the National Infrastructure Commission for Wales (NICW) has published its first annual report, outlining its focal areas for 2020.

It states that the next 12 months will see three main areas of concentration including energy, digital communications and transport.

All of these will have a number of implications for the FM sector, especially energy and digital communications, as the industry seeks to further its use of technology and prepare for the drive in reducing carbon emissions to meet the UK government's net zero carbon aims by 2050.

Experts continue to predict the increasing use of technology will result in facilities becoming more interconnected, with one of the benefits being improved energy management and reduced emissions as a result, which appears to be echoed by the commission's report.

NICW has also additionally requested that all interested parties send views and evidence on their views on key issues for infrastructure around Wales.

These will be used to form the commission's first 'state of the nation' report, due for publication in two years' time.

The NICW was created last year to act as a non-statutory body for the provision of advice to Welsh government ministers on the country's future infrastructure requirements.

Its first year has been spent in gaining understanding of how changes in Welsh economic, environmental and technological activities will impact on infrastructure in the future, which has led to its three main areas of focus.
