How to make working from home become a suitable workplace

The trend of employees working from home is on the rise, and it is only set to increase over the coming years due to the many benefits it provides.

With employers looking to cut overheads of business rates, rents and utility bills, and the push on creating the ideal work life balance, working from home has never been more popular.

However, when working from home it is important that you are setting yourself up to be in the right environment to enhance your productivity. The UK's premier retailer of quality garden and leisure buildings, GBC Group have collated their top tips on how to make your home a suitable workplace.

Create a permanent workspace

When working from home, it is beneficial to provide yourself a space solely where you can work.

This could be in a spare room that you convert into an office, or perhaps invest in an outdoor building such as a garden office or even garden log cabins for sale from GBC Group as they will create the ultimate space to help you distinguish your personal from your work environment.

Make sure wherever you select to have as your workspace that it is comfortable, accessible to electricity and quiet if needed.

Office furniture

Creating a suitable workspace means that your everyday furniture needs to be comfortable, adaptable and useful.

Depending on your space, the key pieces of furniture to have are; a desk, office chair, bookshelf and a storage unit. It will be an investment, however creating a dedicated destination to work will only help with your productivity as you will be in that space five days a week.

Invest in Technology

Depending on the nature of your job it will determine what technology you will need and in the grand scheme of things and this could become quite costly, as you may have to purchase a desktop, laptop, tablet and even phone in order to be able to do your job.

The investment from purchasing the technology, nonetheless, will certainly be worthwhile and will allow you to complete your job effectively.

Don’t give yourself distractions

When working in an office it is not common to find a television playing or having game consoles at hand for example, so it is important that you treat your workspace at home with the same perspective.

You don’t want to decrease your productivity by getting easily distracted so don’t tempt yourself, treat it as a working day and stay away from anything that could deter you from doing work.

If you like having background noise, then it is okay to have the television on, just ensure that you don’t find yourself watching the screen more so than doing your work.

Prepare for emergencies

You would like to think with it being your own home, that accidents would be less likely to occur, but you can’t predict them.

Having a basic home first aid kit will help you on your way should any incident happen. You don’t want to be delaying time of your working day should you have to pop to the shop to pick up some plasters.

So, make sure you have everything you may need such as bandages and medication that are easily accessible should you ever need them.
