Impact of workplace noise examined in survey

08 October 2019

Effects of noise in the workplace include loss of productivity and raised levels of stress, according to the results of a recent survey of 2,000 employees around the UK.

It found that 74% of respondents had indicated that noise at work had impacted on their productivity and 54% said their employer had not done enough to resolve this issue.

Noise was also identified as affecting work relationships, with 29% stating they had "snapped at a colleague" and 11% directing these comments to superiors, with 6% stating they had reacted with violence.

A further 19% of respondents stated that they had found noise issues to negatively impact on their relationships with colleagues.

Additional results from the study revealed that 59% of UK workers said they work in a loud environment, with 30% stating their workplace was "very noisy".

Just 22% of respondents said they regarded their working environment as very well designed.

Taking these results into account, it was perhaps unsurprising that 44% said they were unable to concentrate due to noise and 50% believed this impacted negatively on their productivity.

The survey was conducted by Oscar Acoustics.
