Concerns raised over growth of facial recognition technology use

16 August 2019

Data protection watchdog the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has said it is "deeply concerned" over the growing use of facial recognition technology.

It is currently investigating the use of the technology by London's King's Cross Station, which has been widely reported in the UK's national media.

The redeveloped, 67-acre site installed its system for public safety reasons and developer Argent described it as one of "a number of detection and tracking methods" used on site, according to the BBC.

The ICO stated that it was investigating the site to make sure the technology is being used in accordance with UK laws for the use of data.

It said "any organisations wanting to use facility recognition technology must comply with the law - and they must do so in a fair, transparent and accountable way," the BBC report stated.

When the technology is used there must be documented evidence on how and why its use is legal, proportionate and justified, said the ICO.

With the technology increasingly used by FMs, real estate managers and their security service providers, the findings of the ICO investigation will be keenly awaited by many industry participants and serves as another essential reason to ensure compliance is delivered in all areas for effective management of every facility.
