Workplace volunteering examined in latest study

Comparison of experiences between those who engage with employer-supported voluntary activities and those who arrange their own volunteering shows a disparity between the two.

Fifty-six per cent of independent volunteers reported being very satisfied, compared with 39% of those engaging with employer-supported initiatives.

Discussions with the PFM Editorial Advisory Board had shown the increasing importance of creating communities in and around facilities, with voluntary activities playing a major role in this.

Support for deserving causes is seen as an activity that brings facilities together in a common aim, while often benefiting local organisations and is therefore an important aspect of delivering a sense of community.

The latest study suggests that focusing on the quality of the experience of workplace volunteers can be less of a priority for the companies involved than it may be for other voluntary activities.

Conducted by NCVO, the company says that those organising voluntary engagement activities should consider how they provide workplace volunteers with a positive experience.

It highlights a potential "mismatch of priorities" by those organising workplace voluntary activities.

While charities may see it as a means to access additional funding, while companies may also see volunteering activities as a means to enhance their reputation and possibly increase productivity.

NCVO's findings were within its Time Well Spent: Employer Supported Volunteering research and is the first in a series and part of its organising of Volunteers' Week 2019.
