Drive to improve procurement practices continues to gather pace

18 April 2019

Following calls to improve procurement processes in all areas following the collapse of Carillion last year, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) has announced funding for a new initiative.

With a total of £3m available, the CITB is now requesting applications and expressions of interest, as part of its aims to identify the best examples of good practice that will be shared throughout the industry.

The scheme is part of the Improving Performance Through Better Procurement Approaches commission and follows research conducted in 2017.

Organised by the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE), the study showed how infrastructure procurement practices can have negative effects on productivity and performance, while increasing waste and failing to use technologies that would assist other sectors.

Poor procurement practice had also led to supply chains being locked in cycles of low margins, low investment, variable training standards and dysfunctional relationships, according to Infrastructure Intelligence, leading to projects falling behind schedule and failing to meet budgetary requirements.

Applications for the CITB-led scheme are sought in particular from levy-registered employers seeking to improve performance, trade associations and federations, clients and framework leaders seeking to support supply chain partners and construction training providers or consultancies.

The deadline for expressions of interest is 10 June, with all applications due by 24 June.

More information about the fund is available here.
