Shifting expectations within the working environment

With increasing numbers of generation Z joining the workforce, a new study has revealed that this is changing the expectations for workplace culture.

This was illustrated by 65% of generation Z (aged 18-24) individuals stating that a fun environment is essential to create a positive company culture, compared with just 22% of baby boomers (those aged 55 and over).

On a national basis, 50% of employees agreed with this statement, indicating a trend for more social engagement.

This included the need for communal areas within the workplace, required by 81% of generation Z employees, with a response figure of 64% on a national basis.

Friendships with colleagues was another important factor for 43% of generation Z, compared with 22% of baby boomers.

Working within an office environment was also a popular choice for generation Z, with just 8% preferring to work from home compared with a figure of 20% nationally.

There was considerable support for employers championing mental health and wellbeing from 76% of generation Z respondents, also mirrored on a national basis by 72% of the workforce.

Focuses on diversity and support for future generations received response rates of 38% and 49% respectively from generation Z, compared with 31% and 33% nationally.

The benefits of working with older colleagues were appreciated by 70% of generation Z, with a figure of 57% on a national basis.

Conducted by Peldon Rose, the survey was completed in July 2018 with 400 office workers employed in a variety of industries.
