Efficient autonomous floor cleaning with KIRA B 50

Kärcher presents its first robotic floor cleaner from the new "KIRA" (Kärcher Intelligent Robotic Applications) product series.

The autonomous KIRA B 50 scrubber drier can be used economically even on small surfaces. It completes its defined cleaning tasks autonomously and, when necessary, returns to its docking station to recharge the lithium-ion batteries.

The initial mapping of the working area is completed quickly, after which the device is ready for use. Depending on the case, the user can specify so-called hygiene zones that are to be cleaned more intensively.

KIRA B 50 is highly versatile regarding its scope of use – for instance in supermarkets or DIY stores. The new device category is part of Kärcher's holistic approach that is targeted at designing the cleaning process of the future in a needs-oriented manner.

The machines' and the cleaning operatives’ different capabilities should be deployed in the best possible manner so as to raise the cleaning quality to a new level.

Rapid and simple set-up

The device's initial set-up is completed in just three steps: In an initial step, the surface that is to be machine-cleaned is manually covered.

During this process the machine’s sensors capture the floor plan and automatically map it, then, if needed, various cleaning parameters can be stored for individual areas such as the entrance areas, which are to be cleaned more intensively, e.g. due to more soiling.

The machine then changes the cleaning mode independently and, depending on the situation, uses a higher roller brush speed and more detergent. In a final step, all settings are verified during a test run.

Numerous maps can be stored for deployment at various locations, which can then be conveniently accessed via the touchscreen, as required.


The robot uses the "FCCP" (Floor Coverage Path Planning) programme to independently calculate the most efficient cleaning route – even for complex floor plans.

By performing the longest possible forward movements, it achieves the largest possible area efficiency, while simultaneously preserving resources such as water and detergent. Consumption always adapts to the machine speed.

The precise lane-keeping automatism ensures maximum efficiency since the cleaning lines only overlap insignificantly. The cleaning performance is just as good as that of manually-operated machines.

With a pre-sweeping feature, the tried-and-tested roller technology also reliably tackles coarse soiling. Even close-to-the-edge cleaning is possible: The machine approaches walls or shelves up to a distance of 10 cm and automatically extends a moist side broom. Subsequent manual reworking is not necessary.

Docking station

Once the robot has been activated by the operator, it's able to work autonomously for a whole shift, thanks to its docking station.

Where necessary, it approaches the docking station independently, where it then discharges soiled water and cleans the tank, in addition to filling with fresh water and charging the batteries.

The key feature: The device calculates the remaining cleaning time and only charges the storage battery for as long as is needed to ensure that there will be enough energy to complete the cleaning task.

The lithium-ion rechargeable batteries have no so-called memory effect – therefore, partial charging has no negative impact on the rechargeable batteries' capacities or service life.

Cost efficiency

The autonomous scrubber drier is already viable when used on surfaces smaller than 1,000 m². While the machine is cleaning, the cleaning operatives can use the time saving for other productive activities.

Not only can KIRA B 50 be used as a self-driving machine; thanks to its traction motor, it can also be used as a walk-behind scrubber drier. This way, no additional cleaning machines need to be purchased for spot cleaning.


During cleaning operations, precision sensor technology ensures the greatest possible degree of safety for people, objects and the machine itself: The multi-sensor system captures the device's action scope and creates a kind of "virtual bumper" that recognises persons and obstacles and evades them or stops before hitting them – the machine even recognises glass panes.

Thanks to this intelligent operation, the KIRA B 50 can be used safely in public areas. Fleet management As a standard feature, KIRA B 50 is connected Kärcher Fleet – a telematics system for the organisation and management of cleaning machines.

With GPS and mobile communications, cleaning contractors know where their devices are being deployed, what service was performed and when, plus their current status.

The autonomous scrubber drier is available in two versions – with 50 litre or 80 litre tank volumes. The device is produced at the Kärcher company headquarters in Winnenden, Germany.
