Workplace energy key to staff retention, says latest study

A joint exercise by Grenoble Ecole de Management in France and the University of Surrey has revealed the importance of positive energy in the workplace.

Individuals may be dismissed because they dampen "the energy of those around them", not because of poor performance, the announcement from University of Surrey said.

Further results from the research exercise included the news that those who energise their colleagues are less likely to leave.

This may change if the individuals are high performers, the study revealed.

The research was conducted with IT workers over a four-year period by academics of the two research partners.

It was designed to help companies reduce staff turnover and the costs of recruitment, training and loss of performance.

An example of the costs involved is provided by University of Surrey, which said that it can cost up to 4.5 times the salary of an executive to replace them.

While those who have "energetic activations" with their colleagues are less likely to leave a company voluntarily, those classed as high performers are actually more likely to look for other employment opportunities.

Those who do not energise their colleagues are more likely to be asked to leave.

The study provides more fuel to the current focus of wellbeing in the workplace, which is particularly popular within the FM sector at present.
