FM Market shows steady growth
The latest UK Facilities Management Market Development Report from Market & Business Developments Ltd (MBD) predicts continuing growth for the support services sector. The UK FM market encompassing in-house, outsourced and total FM services grew in the period 2003 to 2006 by 13% to £110.6bn and should, by the end of 2007, achieve £115.2bn. The report predicts that the market will increase each year to 2012 between 2-3%, to reach £131bn (at 2007 prices).

Carbon Trust helps UK business save 10m tonnes of CO2
British businesses and public sector organisations saved between 1.2 and 2m tonnes of CO2 from April 2006 to March 2007 through working with the Carbon Trust. This brings the total carbon savings achieved by the Carbon Trust since its creation in 2001 to 10.8m tonnes of CO2, equivalent to more than the combined annual emissions of the cities of Birmingham and Edinburgh.

Land Securities could split from LS Trillium
Land Securities has this week announced that it is undertaking a review of its business structure following its conversion to a REIT in January 2007. Press comment and speculation suggests that LSTrillium, its property outsourcing arm which it acquired in 2000, could be separated from the company. LS Trillium recently purchased AMEC's Project Investments business including AMEC's interests in nine signed PFI projects.

Modus MBO launched
Fit-out and FM business, Modus Group, has been acquired by its management team in a £16m deal. The MBO was led by Toby Benzecry, one of the firm's founders and its new Chief Executive. Modus clients with long term framework agreements include Fujitsu, Regus, Imperial College, Institute of Cancer Research, Johnson & Johnson, UCB Celltech and Shurgard.

Ten steps to energy savings - free
Dalkia has published two free handbooks on carbon management – one aimed at commercial and public buildings, the other at industrial sites – as part of its CarbonCare energy services solution. The 16 page booklets give 10 steps to take to save energy and the planet, indicating the likely savings of each action. For example, improving hot water boiler plant could give savings up to 30 per cent, while fine tuning the BMS could save 15 per cent.

National increase in cases of Legionnaires' disease
The Health Protection Agency is investigating why there has been an increase in the number of reported cases of Legionnaires disease from 120 (January to June 2006) to 163 over the same period this year. In total 549 cases were reported over the whole year. Cases have been increasing across all regions of England and Wales in recent years with 66 per cent of cases contracted within the UK.

Removers to have own standards
The Commercial Moving Group (CMG) of the British Association of Removers (BAR) is to develop a new BSI standard for commercial relocations which, once it is approved, will be compulsory for all CMG members. The standard is expected to be ready in 18 months time.

Hospitals should talk to cleaning industry – BCC
The British Cleaning Council (BCC) has called on hospitals to invite cleaning industry chiefs to help reform their cleaning programmes. It says there is confusion over responsibility for cleaning and on standards such as colour coding.

Operon announces new structure
Operon has created seven new divisions following its merger with Icelandic property management company, Nysir. Nysir owns and operates 11 PFI/PPP schemes in Iceland comprising schools, nurseries and primary healthcare, while in the UK through its acquisition of Operon, it has PFI schemes for North Yorkshire Schools and Ruthin Council Offices.
