Balfour Beatty acquires Covion
Balfour Beatty has acquired Covion, the facilities infrastructure services business from its management and private equity investors. Covion will become part of Haden Building Management, Balfour Beatty's FM arm. The move strengthens and extends Balfour Beatty's reach in FM, and its strategy of offering integrated service packages, extending white collar skills and increasing private sector presence.

Alfred McAlpine rejects bid from Carillion
In response to an announcement by Alfred McAlpine, Carillion has confirmed that it has approached the Board of Alfred McAlpine with a view to entering into discussions about a possible offer for the company at 570p per ordinary share. The bid was rejected. The restructuring of Alfred McAlpine, which includes the creation of a separately listed Business Services Group, is scheduled to be completed by Spring 2008. Carillion says it will continue to evaluate all strategic opportunities, including Alfred McAlpine.

Credit crunch hits property development
The knock-on effect of the US sub-prime market could possibly lead to reduced numbers of speculative developments and drive up prices of major schemes, says EC Harris. According to Martin Silvester, the Midlands' leader of the Lenders and Investor sector at EC Harris in Birmingham, the credit crunch will inevitably bring different challenges to the way major projects and schemes are being planned, funded and developed.

Scottish FM wins contracts in Egypt
A JV company set up by Scottish FM specialist, Key Facilities Management, has picked up two contracts just weeks after opening an office in Cairo. Key MENA, a joint venture between Key FM and the Dar Al Mimar Group, will manage five multi million dollar developments across Egypt from Cairo, to the Red Sea and along the northern coast of Egypt on behalf of the development company, Mountain View.
