Kent schools PFI to MITIE

19 November 2008

MITIE has secured a 31-year contract to deliver total FM to three new PFI schools in Kent. MITIE will be working for Land Securities Trillium who is leading a consortium of partners in completely rebuilding or substantially refurbishing the first 10 secondary schools in Kent’s extensive BSF programme

The £600m deal is a major milestone for the county’s drive to combine significant investment in state-of-the-art buildings and ICT facilities, with a bold educational vision to transform teaching and learning, putting schools at the heart of their community.

The contract award for MITIE confirms its position as the largest provider of FM services to PFI schools in the UK. Initial works on the contract will be worth in excess of £40m and with a further eight PFI schemes likely to be added to the contract, it is expected that the overall contract value will increase substantially.

MITIE have the exclusive rights to deliver FM to the schools, which will include the overall management and helpdesk, engineering and building fabric maintenance, security and all soft services comprising caretaking, cleaning, catering and grounds maintenance.

This is the first award as part of a substantial bidding programme for MITIE within the BSF market. MITIE is currently selected bidder on Newham Building Schools for the Future programme and is short listed for a further two similar contracts.

Patrick Stirland, Managing Director for MITIE’s facilities management business commented: “We are delighted to have had the opportunity to work with our partners to bring our extensive experience in PFI and the education sector in securing our first BSF contract. MITIE’s partnering ethos will ensure that value for money and performance improvement objectives will provide ongoing benefits to the Council, schools and pupils.”
