There are seven finalists in three partnerships in this year's Partners in Healthcare category. These include Cofely with Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, G4S with Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and PTSG with Cofely and Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Cofely with Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust
A range of hard and soft FM services are delivered by Cofely to the Mid-Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust as part of a 35-year PFI contract that covers two new build hospital sites – Pontefract Hospital (since 2009 – 926 rooms and 57 beds) and Pinderfields Hospital (since 2010/2011– 3,257 rooms and 736 beds). Cofely’s contract has also evolved to cover service provision at new buildings as they’re built on both sites. The FM services were transitioned from the hospital’s old estate in 15 phased handovers between 2009 and 2011. Soft services are re-tendered every five years, and were re-awarded to Cofely following a competitive tender exercise in 2014. The contract is characterised by a clear mutual trust and understanding and a ‘whatever it takes’ philosophy to service provision – which can be summed up as ‘getting the job done and worrying about paperwork later’. The result is FM service delivery freeing hospital staff to focus on clinical services, thereby minimising the impact of FM on patient care. This is underpinned by an innovative, proactive approach alongside many groundbreaking initiatives, such as the partnership approach to create the new Dementia ward at Pinderfields Hospital. Cofely employs 390 staff across the two locations to deliver services that include M&E and estates services and much more.

G4S FM with Birmingham Heartlands Hospital
Birmingham Heartlands Hospital is a 900-bed hospital in Bordesley Green. It’s the largest of the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust’s three hospitals and offers a range of facilities and procedures for its patients and visitors, including two infectious diseases wards. G4S FM has been working at the hospital since March 2011 under a five-year contract which includes cleaning, carpark management, helpdesk, portering, ward hostess and security services. G4S FM staff onsite includes 316 housekeepers and 110 porters in addition to nine car park officers and 35 security officers who work across the three trust sites. Heartlands is one of the few hospitals where patients with suspected Ebola, the deadly virus which originated in West Africa, can be tested. If positive, they’re transferred to London’s Royal Free Hospital. What makes Ebola such a serious global health threat is the relative ease by which the virus can be transmitted between humans. People can become infected with the virus if they come into contact with the blood, body secretions or organs of an infected person. Heartlands has opened its doors to six suspected Ebola cases since July 2014. And G4S FM has played an integral role in supporting the hospital to provide outstanding care to suspected Ebola patients while also protecting other patients, staff and visitors at the hospital.

PTSG with Cofely and Queen Elizabeth Hospital
In a critical environment with 24/7 operations, conducting routine testing and inspection works can often become a significant logistical challenge. Successful delivery can only be achieved in this instance if all stakeholders, irrespective of size, work towards a common goal. Putting patient care at the top of the collaborative agenda at the world’s largest single-floor critical care unit, PTSG, Cofely and the owners/operators of Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham established a unique, collaborative culture for the delivery of routine fixed wire testing throughout the state-of-the-art site. Agility, adaptability and innovation were steadfast in the delivery of a far-reaching programme of works. PTSG, the niche service provider to the FM industry, further developed its on-going relationship with the client and Cofely to create a team which “developed a strategy in accordance with the ultimate client and its customers” said Terry Venables, head of FM, Cofely. The partnership was summarised as “A seamless relationship in a difficult, controlled and busy environment.”
In an unusual twist, the team embraced a rolling, fluid programme of works to ensure the core objectives were achieved and not compromised by a focus on deadlines. This willing adaption to the original scope is sentiment to the focus on patient care and a one-team approach at all levels within the supply chain.
