There are six finalists in three partnerships in this year's Partners in Education category. These include ISS Education with School Food Matters; Interserve with University of Sussex; and Sodexo with Northumbria University.

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION
ISS Education with School Food Matters

ISS Facility Services Education provides catering services to over 500 schools in the UK. School Food Matters (SFM) is a charity which promotes food education through cooking and growing projects for schools. They’ve established a gardening grants scheme for over 100 schools in London. They identified many schools already do good work with food growing but which need a bit of extra cash to build new beds, buy small equipment and get compost etc. SFM thought it might benefit from an expert giving them the knowledge needed to really get their school gardens into action. Therefore, rather than supplying plants, they established a grants programme so schools can get exactly what they need and provided them with training sessions to show them how to make the most of the grants. SFM manages the grant programme and ISS provides funds for the grants, associated gardening events and visits from gardening experts such as TV gardener, Chris Collins. ISS also holds gardening theme days in school dining halls to run alongside the grants and support food education. The programme began in September 2012 for schools in Richmond and has since extended to schools in London boroughs of Southwark, Lambeth and Redbridge. It’s still active and they’re looking to roll it out to more schools.

Interserve with University of Sussex

Interserve with University of Sussex
Recent research revealed 76% of UK university students consider campus facilities to be an important factor when deciding where to study. The University of Sussex - a UK research-intensive university founded in 1964, and growing to now accommodate over 13,000 students and 2,200 employees – decided to procure the services of an external FM provider: a long-term provider who’ll work with the University in transforming and managing the estates and FM service. The University’s approach was to integrate its current in-house and outsourced functions to merge service delivery under a single TFM agreement. Following an 18-month competitive dialogue process, the University and Interserve – one of the world’s foremost support services and construction companies with over 80,000 employees worldwide – announced a first-of-its-kind partnership in the education sector. Operating under a unique service delivery model: a Limited Liability Partnership branded Sussex Estates and Facilities LLP (SEF), the partnership is delivering the 10-year £150m contract, which commenced 1 January 2014. The unique partnership model was developed to encourage and formalise a partnership culture, provide a service that enhances the student experience, provide a commercially efficient structure, and support the development of a new brand. The success of this partnership can be measured by improvements to the student, employee and visitor experience as well as facility standards across the estate.

Sodexo with Northumbria University
Over the past 15 years Sodexo has been moving into providing a comprehensive FM service in student accommodation for universities and private developers and at the end of 2013 after extensive market research it launched Student Living by Sodexo, a service offer specifically developed for student accommodation. Northumbria University is a research-rich, business-focused university with a global reputation for academic excellence. It’s one of the largest universities in the UK with more than 33,000 students from 135 countries. In 2013, it received its highest number of applicants and is currently ranked in the UK’s top 10 for the number of graduates entering professional employment. Northumbria University was one of the first of Sodexo’s contracts for its Student Living by Sodexo offer. The partnership began in September 2014 when Sodexo was awarded the contract to manage the university’s brand new flagship 993-bed student accommodation in Trinity Square, Gateshead. The University chose Sodexo as its offer was closely aligned to its own ethos based on ensuring the students are given the best experience possible during their time studying at the University. The accommodation comprises 993 bedrooms all en-suite. In addition to the bedrooms there is a communal space which includes a quiet library/study space.
